Obesity is a major contributor to cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes. It also negatively impacts public health costs and educational outcomes. Individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater are considered obese. Weight and height are used to calculate BMI, which provides a reasonable indicator of body fat and weight categories that may lead to health issues.
Obesity has been recognized as a national epidemic and the rate in Allegan County is on par with the state as a whole. In 2012, the number of adults considered not just overweight, but obese in Allegan County, topped 30% and has remained at or above 30% since then.
