There are two different areas of casework services: diversion and community probation.

Diversion (No Formal Court Action)

• The Diversion program handles less serious offenses and there will be no public record after the juveniles reach age 17.
• The Juvenile Diversion Program focuses on keeping youth out of the formal Court process and away from probation status with the Court.  It targets first offenders and potential offenders with referrals from local law enforcement agencies or from the Prosecutor’s Office.

Community Probation (Formal Court Action)

A delinquency investigation is where a probation officer completes an assessment of the juvenile and his/her family and makes a recommendation to the Court.  Case management services, court ordered monitoring and agency collaboration (i.e. schools, police, prosecutor, etc.) are major parts of the investigation.
Probation by the Family Court, is a core service provided to reduce juvenile delinquency.  Juveniles who are ordered to serve terms of probation must follow strict and specific rules of probation before being discharged.  When a juvenile is placed on probation they will be under the Court’s jurisdiction and be assigned a probation officer who will:

• Provide weekly contact and supervision.
• Ensure compliance with court orders
• Provide case management services within the community
• Monitor any placements that may be needed
• Provide ongoing assessment
• Collaborate with other agencies to provide needed services
• Become a school liaison for the juvenile
